Andrews High School is located in a rural community in South Carolina. Nearly thirty percent of the population in Andrews live in poverty, significantly higher than the national average of 14%. Beginning this year, the state of South Carolina will give all 3rd-grade students the SC Ready Test, which measures their reading ability.

If students fail to read at a 3rd-grade level, they will be held back. In response to this new test, and as a way to support improved literacy, the Andrews SIA team created “Step 4th to Reading," providing students with ten books each, for a total of 6,500 books.

“SIA taught me that no matter how big or small your school/ town is, when everyone is willing to work together you can accomplish anything you put your efforts towards. One person can make a difference… so BE that person!"
